(319 I [WILLIAMS lo POLJTICAL CHIEFJ

Alcaldes Office Sir

The threats of lhe people of Austin's Colony against the town of Anahuac, have been carried inlo effecl. On the 29th left the sloop Ohio from Harrisburg with two pieces of cannon, and about 50 men, armed with rifles, shot guns· & under the command of WiUiam B. Travis, arrived in the part of Anahuac. The cannon men and military equipage were soon landed, and every preparation making for action. Judge Willia Duncan, having been apprived of their intention addressed a not to them, desiring lo he informed of the course which had led lo the measure they were taking, and directing them al the same lime, in polite terms not lo disturb the tranquilily of this Municipality, which was answered verbally, that Mr. Travis would give an answer in half an hour; about double that lime had elapsed and no answer came. Capt Travis suspecting the object of the delay, marched out of Town, lo a convinienl grove of limber, to sheller his men from the cannon. About half an hour afterwards, Lhe answer came, and a little in its rear came the enemy, and took possession of the Lown. The answer amounted lo a descraecl of a surrender of the public arms, and disarming of the National troops. It was then nearly dark. In the course of the night, some further correspondence took place between the parties. and early next morning the Mexicans surrendered and delivered up their arms: Thus enrls the second shameful attack and depulsion of the National troops, that have been stationed al a Anahuac, for the enforcement of the Revenue laws, and thus, a second time has the lrumips of the Customs house been broken up, Our Municipaltiy is in a dreadful condition, the lat outrage at Anahuac has stimulated the maleconlents, several of the Townsmen joined Travis, look up arms &e. I consider the civil officers here, as totally powerless, although they have done every thing in their powere lo avoid the lat~ disturbances. The authorities of San Felipe are raising troops to capture San Antonio, and rccue the Governour &c 1..~c. also nwking arrangement lo form treaties with the Indians. This I It-arn by official clocumcnls, addressed lo the Ayuntamiento of Liberty. All
