Wil- liams to you, as captain of the Texian private Armed Schooner, Terrible; which is to be commissioned, as a Letter of Marque. Also submitting to your consideration the propriety of commis- sioning the said vessel, under the rules and regulations of the Navy. See let- ter from the Secretary of the Senate to the President, Record (MSS.), Vol. 49, p. 80, of the Department of State, Archives of the Texas State Librarr. ,Joseph Crawley Williams was a native of Westmoreland County, Virginia. While still a very young man he immigrated to Kentucky, thence to Louis- iana, where he died in 1858. In 1814, he was a soldier under Jackson and fought at the Battle of New Orleans, and was severely wounded. During the Texas Revolution he offered his fervices in the young Texas Navy, i.nd served in that organization throughout its existence, but returned to his Louisiana home after the annexation of Texas to the United States. His family moved to Texas after his death, and his son, Joseph Crawley Williams, Jr., was a useful citizen of Fort Bend County throughout his life. See the Biographical Encyclopedia of Texas, 153.
