Smith 2 Sir You are hereby appointed Surgeon for this Post, and you will attend to all the sick and wounded now at the place, be- longing to the Regular, or the Volunteer Army, or any, that may hereafter arrive,-and render your accounts to the Governments accordingly- Sam Houston Commander in Chief of the Army. [Addressed]: Doct. Wm. P. Smith Surgeon for the Post of Washington. [ The following report is attached to this letter.] To Major Moody, Sir, You will please to audit the account of Dr. Smith, as Post Surgeon at Washington from the date of his appointment, until tme time he left there. Smith came to Texas from Tennessee in 1833. He seems to have been a man of versatile talents and interests. Besides being a physician, soldier, politician, and farmer-ranchman, he was a Methodist preacher. In 1851 he added another phase of service to an already full life when he became the editor of The Monument (La Grange).
