The people look to the Indians on Arkansas as auxilliaries, in the event of a change-So I will pass that way and see my olcl friends. I will ride to the Hermitage this evening, and see the Old Chief, General Jackson. Salute our friends. Sam Houston. Mr. Jas. Prentiss P. S. When I receive the answer to this at Cant. Gibson I will write you all the news. don't fail to write, and send some money. I have written my friend Jackson! [Attached to this letter was the following memorandum in Houston's handwriting.] Mem 0 Genl Houston It may be necessary to act forthwith in Texas, or it may be impolitic to act for 12 months. The true state of affairs ought to be understood by the com- pany here, as well as the Agent who is to act for them in Texas. This can only be done by actual observation upon the spot. The arrival of Mason cannot affect the state of the country he has left behind him. A population like that of Texas, is in perpetual liability to commotion, and tho it may be tranquil today, a storm may arise tomorrow. [Addressed]: T'o Mr. James Prentiss New York N. Y. Nashville, T, 11 th Sept 1832 My dear Sir, Your favor has not been answer'd in conse- quence of wishing a written statement from Gen 1 Arnold~ who was in possession of the facts upon which he had condemned Mr Pearse. The Gen 1 will write to you, but in the meantime he says, That when, Mr Pearse was appointed, he agreed to appoint a brother in law of Gen 1 A. Vice Consul, but in stead of so doing, he proposed to Gov Pitcher 3 to enter into Partnership with his son, and by way of inducement suggested, that he as Consul would have opyortunities of smuggling goods into the Po1·t of Mata- I moros-This was communicated by Gen 1 P. to the Secy of State.
