Texas, 1843 ?l Previous to the conquest of Mexico, Texas & its surrounding coun- tries inhabited by the Natches Indians; their lands extended from the Mississippi to· the Rio Grande-- from the Gulf to the East Osage :river- the capital of the Natches nation was on th~ west bank of the Mississippi in about 30°. 30' N. Latd- 1528- Cortez preparing an expedition against the Natches under Narvaez who crossed the Rio Grande & reached the :Mississippi-the Natches fled- this is called the "Flight of the· Natches" 1685 Accidental landing of La Salle in :Matagorda Bay- 1687, La Salle assassinated by two of his followers on his way to- 1689 The Spaniards under Alonzo de Leon marched from Mexico to -dislodge the La Salle colony. The french have to return to Natchi- foches. The Spaniards follow with the Asianes Indians to whom they ,give the name of Texas or friends- from this comes Texas- 1690 Mission of San Francisco established. 1692 Mission of San Antonio founded & erected into a Presideo in ·1730- 1716- La Bahia founded- 1719 The Marquis de Aguayo offers his services & fortune to pre- -vent the french from Colonizing- then at war with France- 1730- Spanish expedition against the Indians- 1731 Some 57 persons from Old Spain & the Canary Islands settle in San Antonio- 1732 Nacogdoches founded- 1812 Lieutenant Magee sent from Natchitoches to break up a gang of outlaws and robbers on the Sabine, whom he routed- after this McGee left the U S Army & with 300 followers placed Bernardo a Mexican & follower of Hidalgo at the head of an expedition against the Spaniards- They attacked and took Nacogdoches. The fall of · Bahia followed against Salcedo & 1500 men. Magee died, & the com- mand fell to Kemper- San Antonio surrenders. Bernardo named Generalissimo- by his orders 17 Spanish Officers Killed- at this :Kemper Lockett, Ross and others, disgusted at the proceedings leave Texas & returned to the U S- Perry now got the command, uniting with 700 Mexicans under Manchaca-Variegas the Viceroy of Mexico sent Elisondo with 1500 men & within a few miles of San Antonio, they were attacked by the Americans, Mexicans and indians- The Spaniards were routed having 400 killed 7 wounded- 1813. An expedition formed in the U S to assist Morelos, but through treacherous conduct failed- defeated at Rio Medina- 1815 Morelos shot near Mexico 22 Deer- (see page 5- for the years 1816 & 17) 1817 Lafitte known as the "Pirate of the Gulph" Establishes himself on Galveston Island ha,,ing been routed out of Barrataria by the U S Govt. in 1814. .(1817] :Mina goes to )lexico taken & shot by the Spaniards . · " )Ianchaca went OYer to the Spaniards-when 400 Americans & 200 indians "nobly sustained the unequal conflict, that when obliged
