I also embrace this opportunity of soliciting the appointment of Consul to New York. I am about lea,·ing in a few weeks for the North, and would like the appointment, which would be an introcluc- -tion to me in the commercial emporium of which I wish to become a member- I would not take the liberty of making this request had .not your Excellency so repeatedly assured me of your desire to serve me-- and as this is the only office I have ever desired under the Government I hope your Excellency will see fit to confer it on me, more especially as I am informed it will meet the approbation and be confirmed by your successor The early attention of your Excellency -to this will confer a lasting obligation on your friend and brother .soldier J. 1vf.
