His Excellency l'iI B L.a11un MY DEAR GENERAL I arrived here a few days since on business, and am much gratified i:o hear of Your Entire recovery I am Gratified also to find· our friend Gen Hamilton has succeded in Secureing the Long hoped for loan with proper use of the money our Govt must Be Entirely relieved of her present Embarrassments- permit me to Recommend to Your notice Charles Moore Esqr of this place as a Suitable person to fill the office of District atty for this dist-in place of Wm F Gray Deced- l\ir :Moore is a Gentleman of fine talents and well qualified for the place I have to desire that You will appoint Wm Seybold M D. of Jasper -County medical Censor for that district, as we have no Censor nor, have we had for the last year and it is important that one should be appointed as soon as practicable With all the hard times I am getting -along very well & I assure you as a friend that I do not Envy any one a seat in our Congress at this time- I feel like another man Since I have divested myself of all political feelings. I see Judge Webb here he is in Good health, Mr Jackson .also may You long Enjoy uninterrupted health & happiness is the Sincere Wish of Your Sincere friend s. H EVERITT

To His Excellency. l\Iirabeau. B. huIAR This is the first time that I have had the pleasure to acknowledge the very great honor you had intended me, and indeed it is a compli- ment, that through my life I shall always remember with feelings of the deepest gratitude. Though I may never hope to give your Excel- lency any equivalent return for so great a partiality; yet I received that mark of your favour with pride and pleasure; not be cause I thought I merited so high and distinguished an honor; but because I thought your excellency unbiased by personal motives had thought to honor those who would like to merit honor. Lieutenant Ellison who will do me the favour to bear this requests me to state to you the reason why he did not accompany the troops on their return by the l\Iilitary road These were the circumstances. He was below the troops on duty an hundred miles and went up as I did to Fanin County where the troops were stationed, and when we arrived we ascertained that the troops had aone two davs before and at that time they must have been three davs,.,ahead and -~re were not in twenty miles of the place where .the troops had starte~ from.
