No. 1986. JOHN APPLEMAN TO LA1[AR
Navy Yard Galveston March 27th 18(411
His Excellency M. B. LAMAR President Repc of Texas .Sm
I beg _you to e[xcuse] the liberty I. take in addressing you, for whi Pe I] would not occupy your time, were it not that [I consilder my case a peculiar one, and imperious demands that I should state it to your Exce[llency.] I have sir followed the sea from my [early] boy-hood, and by my own exertions and, I may [say] without vanity, by my good conduct, raised to the command of, as captain, of several fin[e ships.] I ha,·e performed several successful voyages, [a·nd l had the good fortune to escape with my vessel . . . [mutilated] by sea, during the storm -0f Octr 1837 when . . . [mutilated) vessels were wrecked and totaly lost on this Is[land.] In 1839 I was appointed by the Depts . . . [mutilated] Master in the Navy, and soon after ordered on board the Brig Wharton (then Colorado) under [the J command of Comder Moore. For some cause [that] I could not dirive the reason, he took a vio[lent] prejudice against me which exibited itself on [all J occasions. I remonstrated with him and r [ecently] told him if he doubted my capacity I was willing to pass through the most rigid scrutiny [that] examiners he might appoint · chose to purs[ue.] . It was of no avail I was dismissed as mu[tinous.] I made applica- tion to the Hon. L. P. Cook for . . . [mutilated] Lieutenant's appointment and informed the [CommJodore of the same, and received my appoint f ment] from the Department, since which time I have acted as Lieut of the Navy Ya[r<l] and . . . [mutilated] was Comcler of the Brig Wharton, and with confidence refer you to Capt J. G. Tod for my conduct and ch[aracter.] I need not assure you that [I will] be most happy in being retained in the N[avy] as I am pleased with my profession [andl situation. Nor need I say that without y[our] kind interference I have e,·ery reason to be[lieve] that I shall be sacraficed to the vindicti[rel ground- less prejudice of Commodore E. W. [.Moore.] Very Hespectfully Your Obt. Se [ vt.] • JOHN APPLE.MAN Lieut T. N. fEndorsed :] John Appleman Lieut. T. N. Galveston. March 2'i'th 1841
