the circumstances in the case should in your Excellency's opinion jus- tify me in deviating from said rule. I shall therefore wait your de- cision in this particular. Judge '\Yebb can state more fully to your Excellency the merits of the claim as well as the character of the rule,. and the attending circumstances. Your most obt. Servt. Jorrn P. BonDEN Com G. L. office r Addressed:] His Excellency 1\Hrabeau B. Lamar Present LEndorsed :] John P. Borden Com Genl. L. Office, Austin, Novr. 2nd. 1840 In relation to Land on GalYeston Island. No. 1934. SAMUEL A. ROBERTS TO LAlHAR Galveston Novr 8th. 1840 DEAR GENL A Yacancy has occured in the office of "Solicitor" in this, the 1st Judicial District by the resignation of Mr Reid- As yet I ha,·e heard of no applications for the ofiice but doubt not there wilt !,e many. To the members of the Bar and to the Community generally, it is a matter of importance to ha,·e a man in that office who is a gentleman as well as a lawyer-whose principals an<l habits are fixed-and whose moral character is free from all reproach- Such, I can confidently say is, in every respect Alexander P. Crittenden- He is more than com- monly well read in his profession, possesses an acute and penetrfl, ting mind, is sober, industrious, studious, honest and honorable- In addi- tion to these strong claims to be favorably considered for appointment he presents an additional one of being a father of a young family and the husband of a most interesting young wife two relations which never ~·et failed to have their influence with you-when to all this is added that he is poor & entirely dependent on his profession for his support, I am convinced you will agree with me that a more suitable person for the office cannot be found- I may add that I believe his appointment would giYe general satisfaction to the community. Genl Johnson & Col Love I believe, intend writing to you upon the· same subject from which you will perceive that you have an opportu- nity of obliging more friends than one by bestowing this office upon a most. worthy man-I have so often troubled you with my recommenda- tions, and have had occasion, so frequently to be gratified with your attention to them, that you may feel assured I should not have troubled· you in behalf of ~lr Crittenden, if I had not felt a warm interest in his success As ever, your friend and obt servant SA:ML. A. ROBERTS I do believe you could not make a better appointment JAS. LOVE Your Excellency in my opinion could not make an appointment with a stricter regard to the public interest or which would afford more· gratification to your obt Sevt A. SIDNEY JOHNSTON r Addressed:] His Excellency l\f. B. Lamar Austin [Endorsed:] Sarni. A. R~berts and others_ qalveston Novr. 8th. 1840► Recommending Alex. P. Crittenden for Solicitor.
