WASHINGTON TO LAMAR Nashville Sept'r 14th 1840 DEAR Srn:- I sent you some time ago the M. S. of the first part of a Tale which I had written. I am not certain that you rec'd it, as I have not heard from you since. I cannot proceed with the second part without having the first to refer to occasionally. I have, as I stated in my letter to you,·compleated all of the first number of the work I anticipate pub- lishing, save that one Tale. I thought at first, I would publish it in this Country, but I have now concluded to have it done in the U. S. A. I have made every arrangement to leave this Country the first of October, at the very farthest. I shall go immediately to old Georgia, where a greater part of my M. S. poems· are-and I am very anxious to see my dear old mother once more before she takes her flight to a better world. You would therefore, confer a favor if you'd send by :Mr Raymond the l\L S. I gave you in Houston, & and the one I sent you. if you rec'd it. The people here are nearly all your bitter enemies, without knowing themselves, why. There was a man here of the name of Taylor, a lawyer from Mobile, who has been uwrelenting in his aspersions against you. He is a d-d scoundrel to a certainty. Yours &c LEWIS :M. H.
