Garret bemg the COil}mander of the company on his chscease l\fy son succeeded him, & that last Feby being in Austin he was killed by A. ?if. Todd, some unpleasant words having taken place between them for some clays I. fully belie\'ed the report, but thought after some weeks had elapsed & receiving no authentic account of his Death, myself & family & A numerous circle of Friends. began to indulge some hope, that the report of My Sons Death was unfounded I had directly after I. heard the distressing intelligence addressed. a letter to Messr. Gordon & Moreland Attorneys at Austin from A Card presented to me as I. knew neither of the Gentlemen. Myself & Friends thought surely Joseph Creery was known well to the Texian Govermt. & they will surely not let his Death pass unnoticed. it will be com- municated in Some of the Public Journals & Direct it to be copied into the N Orleans Public Papers. one who had exposed his life his health his all in the Servic<! of the Texian Govermt. surely they will not they cannot forget. him, thus we all reasoned My Dear Sir, & con- cluded that My Son was yet alive on the 20th day of last May A day long to be remembred by Me. I was introduced to A Gentlemen in Pratt St. Baltimore an Entire Stranger to me who I understood was from Texas I. was informed by him that the individual that was killed was A married l\fan with three or four children. I knew that could not be My Son as he was a Single man I had not beard that he was Married, he described the Person of the man & that did not answer the description of my Son that Person killed was much lower in Stature than my Son who was Six feet 2. inches in height. [on margin:] My Son Born in Baltimore Deer. 15, 1813 after he had thus spoken to me I asked him his name he told me his name was Gordon of the Firm of Gordon & Moreland Attornevs Austin Texas. this was a Strange coincidence of circumstances I directly informed him that I. had wrote to them I was now almost fully persuaded that My Son was alive & returned to the House inform the Family of the pleasing circumstance & to return our l\fost devout acknowledgments to our Heavenly Father for his unbounded love & Goodness towards us for the Preservation of our Sons life my mind within the last few days has again been deeply distressed A. Dr. Forrest who has been residing in Texas some years & who has known ::\Iy Son positively declares that it was My Son who was Killed although he was not in Austin he residing in Galveston. Hon'd Sir I. am informed that you are not only President of Texas A Gentleman but a Friend to Humanity Kind Sir I'm in distress can I. claim your Friendship 0, will you ha,·e the goodness to enquire into this matter & ascertain whether it is my Son or not that hn~ been killed l\f r Gordon Testimony I believed & I do not know what )[otive he could have to deceive me. ::\[y Son was An interesting ~·outh wht>n he left Balt.
