No. 1867. JAMES H. STARR TO LAMAR
Nacogdoches Augt 20th 1840
DEAR GENERAL
I arrived here on the 15th inst. and found my family very sick, as .also nearly every resident of the town and Surrounding Country- In fact, after leaving Cole's Settlement I saw but few persons along the .road who were not prostrated by the prevailing fever- The members of my own family are now convalescent and the disease .is every where abating- I think I will be able to visit Austin in October when I shall be under the necessity of tendering my resignation. And should you be able to find a suitable person to succeed me before that time I hope .Jou will consider my resignation as received and make the appointment immediately- Nothing but imperative necessity could induce me to withdraw my feeble aid from your Cabinet so long as my endeavours met with your .approbation, and though I may not be able to continue in the station to which you invited me, yet in an humbler capacity I shall en- .deavor to sustain the well-directed efforts of the Administration. The harvests in this portion of the country are abundant, and as soon .as the temporary gloom which the great prevalence of disease bas pro- ,duced shall have disappeared business will resume its usual activity- The result of the election of Senator for this District I think quite -doubtful. Burton bas been very active during the absence of l\fose- For the lower house, I think Kaufman and Mayfield will be returned- 'There is no excitement here upon the subject of the removal of the .Seat of Government. I remain with due respect Your very obt Servt J AS. H. STARR [Addressed:] To His Excellency M. B. Lamar Austin [Endorsed:] Jas. H. Starr Aug 20, 1840. Tendering resignation.
