No. 1860. W. F. GRAY TO LAMAR
Houston Augt 14. 18-10
DEAR Sm,
I avail myself of the offer of Mr VanNess to take your Saddle up to .-\ustin- It i~ the first opportunity to send it that has offered. He leaves here this morning. Genl. Henderson has had a protra, cted illness, but he is so far re- covered as to be able to walk about Town. He leares for Galveston today, in the Steam Boat Genl. Houston. 1\Iajor Cooke has backed out of the canvass for a seat in Congress. The contest is now only between Reily and Tomkins, and we indulge the confident hope that the latter gentleman will be genteelly beat. In Town the calculation is, Reily will get two votes to his one. And in the Country he will divide with him, so that he cannot overcome the ~[ajority in Town. Both parties are making uncommon exertions. The Health of our Town continues fair. My family are all well. Respectfully Your Obt. Svt. w. F. GRAY [Addressed:] His Excellency l\f. B. Lamar. City of Austin. [Endorsed_:] Wm. Fairfax Gray Aug 4th 1840.
