No. 1798. CYRUS JOY TO LAMAR
Galveston, May lat. 1840-
To His Excellency, M. B. LAM.AR ) President of the Republic of Texas ) Sm,
Shortly before leaving Philadelphia, I received the paper which I take the liberty herewith to inclose. By this paper I percieve that the Hon Senate of the Republic of Texas, at its late session, vacated the Consulate at Philadelphia by rejecting me- Of this, I have received no official notice from the Department of State- A correspondent informs me that my appointment was opposed by one Senator only, (an Eastern Sent) with great virulence, and that that Honorable Body was taken, rather by surprise) no member present, . knowing ought for or against me, he succeeded in carrying his point. I impugn the motives of no member of that body- But I am confident that the Hon member who opposed me, had been misinformed and induced to take such steps, either by some person or persons in TeiaS or at Philadelphia from motives of interest or malice, and the result shows how well the plot has succeeded- I have not been apprised that any new appointment has been made by your Excellency- If it has not, I have to solicit of your Excellency that it may not be done until the next meeting of Congress, before the Senat~ of which, I pledge myself to make defence through those who best know rue, and whose reputation for integrity and honesty is beyond impeachment- Indeed, the whole shipping and Commercial community of the City of Phfladelphia, if necessary, can be brought to. test.ify in my favor- Commercial business brouO'ht me here and did it not press me to re- turn, I should cf o myself the honor to visit your Excellency at the City
