it to him. General Terrel is a gentleman who cannot fail to take a high stand in our Country whatever station he may occupy in the out- set and I am sure you will be pleased with him when you meet him. He has been a Citizen of Texas I believe 8 or 9 months and has already made many warm friends. I have but little acquaintance with Mr J ohnst_on the other gentleman who is spoken of as a candidate but- from what I know of him he is a good man and strictly honest but certainly much inferior to Gen! Terrel l\lr Johnston is also spoken of as Dist Atto and I think would make the best that can be had in this District. I would not trouble you on this subject but I feel deeply- interested inasmuch as I expect to practice Law in this Circuit and wish to have an able and an honest Judge to preside to whom we may look with confidence for correct decisions- .:Moreover I wish to see him 011 the bench for the general good of Texas. I am not certain when Judge Branch will resign but he told me he would do SO· soon I have no news of interest to communicate to you as this is a dully stupid region of the world. The people seem to be getting along· quite well and are very well satisfied with· the Administration of Affaires. ' I have the honour to be your most Obedient & very humble servt J.
