At the request of Col. Wm. T. Austin, who has furnished me with a letter of introduction to your Excellency, it was my intention to visit Austin forthwith in order to obtain an interview on the subject of pro- curing an appointment under your Excellency's administration in either the Land Department or in tl1at of Internal Improvement. I have been engaged during the last 15 years on various public works both in Europe and the United States as a Civil Engineer & Surveyor and am in possession of the requisite documents testifying my skill and knowledge of my profession, from several eminent engineers and presidents of public Company's of the works upon which I have been employed- A residence of 6 years in Louisiana has afforded me ample opportunity for acquiring a thorough acquaintance with the best modes of Construction and application of materials &c furnished by a South- ern clime; during the last 4 years I have held the office of Chief Engineer of the West Feliciana Rail Road in Louisiana, which I re- signed in order to emigrate to Texas in November last. Urgent business demands my attention in Louisiana immediately which precludes the possibility of my waiting on your Excellency for some weeks, as soon, however, as I can possibly return I will afford myself that pleasure and trust that should your Excellency have any eligible appointment that can be reserved during that time Col: Wm. T Austin may be advised of it, and he will communicate it to me; at the same time allow me to assure your Excellency that should you be pleased to honor me with employment, the duties of my office will be faithfully and skilfully performed- I am in possession of the most approved Instruments necessary for the prosecution of the nicest a_nd most accurate investigation or research connected with my profession, both in preliminary Examination with a view to the Location of public roads, Canals &c, their location and construction, and for the estab- lishment of lines of demarcation or the definement of Territorial boundaries I have the honor to Subscribe myself Your Excellency's most obt: svt: C. w. I recd. today a letter from Alexander, dated Washington City 4!h )farch in which he states that he expects to leave about the 10th m the ne;v Brig of war. He says he shall return to 'l;'exas .wi~h 'Sad & wretched spirits' not knowing to what he can turn his attention. He states however that he had written to Judge ·webb on the same day he wrote to me, proposing to aesociate with him in the practice
