REID TO·LA)IAR DEAR GENL- At the request of my friend Col De Bland, of the 2d Jud District I address you in reference to the Vacancy occasioned by my resignation of the Office of District Attorney- I believe him to be intellectually Competent to discharge the duties of that office if your Excellency should deem it proper to offer him the situation-I travelled the greater part of my Circuit with him & !,.-now no one in that District with whose appointment f would be more gratified. To his Excellency President L.BlAR of Texas- DEAR Srn Som time in the first months of the Year of 1838--0r rather part of 1837 I recd a communication from a Brother of Mine then a resident of Your country and located Near Houston- he was a gun- smith by trade & in business with a person by the name of Kipp I believe I have learned since that he died in Texas but when or where I have never been able to ascertain, he had I suppose some little prop- erty which of right-belonged to Me as I am the only Survivor of our family- I have learned also that he was in possession of a "head right'' or some right for land there-perhaps by having been connected with the army of Texas or in Some other way This information is quite vague & uncertain Somuch so thnt I have dispaired almost of ever learn~1g his fate- My object is now to ask a favor which I presume you will feel willing to grant that is should you he in possession of any information relative to him or know of any person who would be most likely to hnve known, him to dirert this letter to such person soliciting an immediate answer perhaps Your Land office will give all we wish to know- You will excuse me for thus troubling you with my priYate affairs but as Your name stands at the head of Your country & as I knew no other name there I have ventured to address you · The persons name was Thomas J. Piper small Statue-with Sandy hair- 24 or 25 years of age has resided in Natchez (Miss) some 3 or 4 years-formerly from Columbus Ohio-
