REID TO LAl\IAH Houston Jany. 27th 1840- DEAR GENER.Hr- From. intelligence recd in this place I haYe ascertained that Con- gress has newly organized the Judicial Districts-throwing the Second- Judicial District, far up the Country- 1 regret from the position which I occupy that it will be utterly impossible for me, to leave Houston -& if Congress assume the power, (which l believe to be your prerogative) to Elect a District Attorney for the Dist- of which Harrisburg, is a part-and another incumbent be appointed, for this "New'' district, I will be forced to resign into your hand the trust, with which I have been honored by your Friemlship & .Marked .Kind- ness- l lament the change-inasmuch as I believe during my short term, I gave unfrersal satisfaction-& the Office was a sure means of support to my young family- lf it meet your approbation, I should be more tha11 happy, to continue my services as the District Attorney of the New-District-Composed of "Galveston"- "Liberty" & "Har- risburg"- the weight of my civil practice being in those counties, but if you haYe made other anangements General- the claims of wife and children, will compel me to "stick" to my present domicil-my· appoint- ment as far as I have been able to form an opinion was well recd over in Brazoria, the hotbed of personal opposition to you- & my constant effort:- have been to dignify my office, and to illustrate that sound politic-al maxim- that the appointed, should so act, as to reflect honor upon the appointing power- How far I haYe accomplished this, can be ascertained from the Brazoria Members of Congress- I am happy to learn, that your health has improved, in the salu- brious climate of Austin.
