The Texians being . . [mutilated] of the Place during the night an<l untill two oclock ne:d day not Seeing the enemy coming the Prepared to burn the Garrison and cuartel [ ?] . [mutilated] the only Public Property that was in the [mutilated] so the Started to Cross the river which was at the distance of :five hundred yards, takeing with them McGloins and an other Peice of Cannon and Several muskets with a gre[at deal] of amunition, on Getting to the river and one half of the men a cross Inteligance was brought that the enemy was within about atacking them which the did in a dreadful manner by Giving Indian yells and charged [on] to too [sic] them, but was repulsed by the fire of the . . · [mutilated] kil1ing Lieutenant Dn Marselino Garcia one of the bravest mexicans that was in the Service with Some others, w[ounde]d Nine two of which died after, the damage on the Texian side was only the loss of three fingers which was shot off [mutilated] During the action a very heavy rain fell which caused the Texians to throw the two pieces of cannon and with Several muskets -and amunition into the river, not having means to take them along the Stoped that night and for two days after in San Patricio where the ware received with Joy & Pleasure by their friends. In January 1836 after the Surrender of Bejar by Gn Cos an expe- dition was Got up to go to matamoros, which marched from the above Place by way of Goliad on there c0ming there Capt. P. Dimitt then commanding had the flag of Independence hoisted on the walls of Goliad, which was ordered to be taken down by f Cols] Johnson & Grant stating that the ware federalists an<l would Stand to the Con- stitution of 1824, the then marched to the )I ission where the expected to meet with Col Fannin which had Stuted from Velasco with vol [unteers] and provisions, and was to land at the Copano to Join Col. Johmon & Grant there was at this time Sn_y five hundred men at the :Mission all willing to go to )Iatamoros and only waiting the arrival of Col. Fanning [whose forces had not l rome. In the Interim Genl. S. Houston Got to }\fission and advised them not to go on the Said expedition as it woul<l he ruinous to the cause o( Texas through which means some stopecl Johnson & Grant with a company of sixt_y men with three Pieces of Brass cannon )1arched to San Patricio with a Yiew as the then Stated to stop untill Col Fanning would arrive and then Proceed to matamoros durino- there stay in Said Place San Pa- tricio. Information was brought that Corumadt Rodrigues which .for- merly comd. at Lipantitlan was encamped Some twent~ miles from there with about twenty men which he had to watch their movements
