No. 1595. JAl\IES LOVE TO LA1IAR

Houston Dec 30th. 1839

DF.,rn GENJmAL, We have no domestic news on the gulf of particular interest. They hear <;mce iri a while from Austin, and most frequently hear of that which never occurred, the very bitter can never reasonably understand why, all measures necessary to support the interests of the counties all carried & were so exceedingly unpopular. The truth is when yon sift the cause of opposition in those most clamorous you can trace it to some imagined personal grievances, The con l'ederation of small Republics North of us, are trying [to] ruin a nation, whilst we are founding one..The Congress had not organized on the 10th because the clerk would not call the names of members elected in the usual manner and because the clerk will not call they do not know how to elect a speaker Is it not contemptible The Harrisburgh Convention have nominated Genl. Harrison, he of course will be Mr. Van .Beurens cornpetiter- The appointment of l\fr. Jackson gives satisfaction to all I have heard express their opinion We will be glad to meet you and the young ladies in N. 0, where we propose to go in two weeks Respectfully Your friend [Addressed:] Genl. M. B. Lamar Austin [Endorsed :] J as. Love Dec. 30. '39 J.HIES LOVE
