consumate the object of my present mission and hope we shall have a pleasant visit together to the U. S. By the bye I shall write in a confidential letter to Vicksburg that you will probably visit that place in l\Iarch or April and cause it to be communicated to -----. I shall write to you from time to time as occasions present themselves. Judge Rusk informed [me] at San Augustine on my journey from Mississippi home that as soon as he organized the Supreme Court he should resign the office of Chief Justice which will necessary cause to devolve on you the appointment of a gentleman to fill that office ad interim and it affords me as much satisfaction to recommend to you for that appointment, in the event Judge Rusk should resign, my friend Judge John Scott, as it has ever done me to recommend any gentleman to you for an office. He is an able lawyer and an honest man possessing the confidence of all who know him. I have just received letters from the U. S. informing me that my private affairs are in a desperate condition and need my attention im- mediately, but I will complete the line before I return.
