While tendering to you my grateful acknowledgements for the con- fidence which you have continued to repose in my integrity (after the many bitter assaults which have been made upon my reputation) by nominating me to the Senate·for the highly honorable and responsible office of Post Master General, I must beg leave to decline the accept- ance of that office- The motives which impel me to this course, I hope will be appreciated by you & that you will receive the assureance that it.would be my highest pride & Gratification to serve in any sta- tion to which I might be called under your administration, Could I do so without sacrificing that self respect which every man of con- scious integrity should feel. But when I look at the unrelenting vio- lence with which I have recently been pursued, & perceive that some of the feeling which has gi,·en rise to that violence elsewhere, has pur- sued me even into the Senate Chamber & infected those who had to pass upon my nomination to Such an extent as to give rise to the impression on the part of some that I am unworthy of the station to which you had intended to call me, I cannot in justice to myself and in justice to you accept the office I am with great respect Your Obt Servant EDWIN WALLER [Addressed :l To His Excellency i\f.B. Lamar Present [Endorsed:] Edwin \Vallers Resignation Post Master General Dec: 10. 1839
