To His Excellency-:i\'[mABEAU B LAMAR President of the Republic of Texas- Srn-

Since my return to Mississippi I have had repeated attacks of ague & fever, which has prevented me from arranging my private affairs as soon as I contemplated, On day before yesterday I had a renewed attack, which still con- tinues- For this reason I do not expect to start to Texas before the 1st of January- 1 shall proceed immediately to Washington, where I shall await such communications as your Excellency may direct to me- From the partial returns, which I have seen I am induce<l to believe that I am elected 1'Iajor General by a large :Majority- ! shall of course await the orders of vour Excellencv- But it is my desire to engage· in active service, as soon as practicable.
