TEXAS STATE LIDRAllY

No. 1546. THOl\.IAS GALES FORSTER TO LAMAR City of Austin, Nov. 28th 1839

To His Excellency :MIRABEAU B. L.Hu.R President of the Republic of Texas, Sm:

I am induced to believe, that as the :Minister to the United States has been recalled, the situation of Secretary of Legation will be like- wise vacated; in which event, I most respectfully request the appoint- ment. I confess Sir, that in doing so, I am actuated in some degree by a selfish motive, as my family are residents of Washington City; which fact however, I do not think, will detract from my probable services in the capacity desired. I presume Sir, you are acquainted with my family, by repute if not with some of them personally nevertheless I do not wish to base my deserts upon the qualifications of others, be- lieving that Honors thrive, \Vhen rather from our Acts we them derive, "Than our foregoers." Enclosed, you will find a Letter of introduction and recommenda- tion given to me nearly a year ago; but which I decided I would not deliver, as you were then sufficiently troubled with applicants-deter- mining at the same time, to depend entirely upon my own exertions for preferment. How far my conduct has coincided with the predic- tion of my friend Col. Baylor, 'tis for others to say, not myself. In making the application I now do, I am not actuated by any ·dis- satisfaction in regard to the gentleman who has honored me with the appointment of Chief Clerk of the Department over which he pre- sides-far from it-for none can esteem Gen. Johnston more than I do, whether for his Public or Private Virtues. His every act is indicative of the fact, that he holds Political as well as moral dishonesty incom- patible with the Character of a gentleman, and establishes the convic- tion, that he is one of the most pure Public men I ever knew. I enclose this in a note to him. I have the honor to be Very respectfully, Your most oht. Srv't. Tnos GALES FosTER [Addressed:] To His Excellency, Jiirabeau B. Lamar, President of Texas.
