President LAMAR Sm

It "·as my intention to ha,·e proceeded to Austin for the purpose of rendering an account of my late stewardship with which _you were pleased to honor me. At present it is impossible, for on my arri,·al herL• last Sunday I found my wife very sick She is however better this morning. How sincerely did I wish when I found her s_ysiem rnc-ked with pain and her veins fired by fever that the Gulph never !tad ebbed from this cursed region but that its briny warns still coYered those spots beneath whose sod repose the hope of parents & wi,·es & the prospects of brave hearts. Still most honored Sir, I cannot refrain from expressing to you the deep gratitude which ani- mates my bosom, for the confidence you have reposed in my honesty & talents by giving me two high & responsible agencies. That I may ever act so as to be worthy the esteem of one so worthy & patriotic as yourself is my most ardent wish The East was comparatively quiet. A few Indinn struggles had been in the nation but l have no belief that thev were there in force A few days before leaving Naeogdoches the candidates for l\fajor gen- era1- came to town Sherman will run Hueston Yen· close in the county of Nncogdorhes. In the counties of Jfom:ton- Shelby- Augustine I helieYe he will b<>at him Throughout Reel Ri,er I enter- tain little doubt but that Sherman will outrun Hueston. Pardon my vanit_v hut if I could ]um? hnd time after Douglass declined I could ha,·e beat them all I believe. The Repr<>sentatives from ~helby-.-Nacogdorhes-& Houston will be your supporters most generally. Col Davis from Augustine is not a cleeicled Houston man. I trnst the whole Congress will appreciate your Jrntriotic motives, & adopt those mensures of policy, which no doubt you will nchise. If possible I will \'isit Austin soon. ~lrs. Heil_v wishes to be remembered most kincllY to the ladie:-: of your family & joins me in the expression of sinrere wishes for your own welfare & prosperity. I write to Dr Starr with whose appointment the East is muc-h gratified \\·ith sentiments of highest este<>m Yours ,L\MES RE[t.Y rAd,lressecl :] Prirntc. His Exrellenr_v :\lirnbPHl\ B.
