Accompanying this I have the honor to present for your signature two drafts on the :Merchants Bank at New Orleans, one in favor of William Henry Daingerfield Commissary of purchases for five thou- sand dollars, and one in favor of Capt Benjn. Y. Gillen four thousand dollars both in duplicate & also an order instructing the said Bank to place to the credit of General A. Sidney Johnston Secretary at War the sum of ninety four thousand six hundred and thirty eight dollars: 39/100 requesting the Bank to transfer that amount to the Bank of the United States of Pennsylvania there to be subject to the drafts of the Secretary of War provided it can be done without expense to this Government, otherwise to remain to his Credit in New Orleans. The total amount of the above drafts and Order is one hundred and three thousand sh hundred thirty eight 39/100 dollars which with two drafts hitherto executed in favr of Capt Benjn Y. Gillen and the Secretary at War for five thousand four hundred and fifty eight dollars make the sum of one hundred and nine thousand and ninety six 39/100· dollars the amount of the requisition furnished the Department by the Honorable Secy at War under date of 28th of August last- I have the honor to be Very Respectfully Your Excellency's obt. I am fully sensible of the temerity_of my presenting myself to your notice. I recollect but one person in Texas who has any knowledge- of me, and that is Doctor Branch Archer;-I do not know where to, address him, my great de_sire to obtain some satisfactory intelligence~ of the climate, soil, state of society and every other information which· you may deem desirable to a family entertaining views of becoming Citizens, must be my apology. I cannot rely upon the many and con- tradictory accounts which have come to my knowledge. · :My whole family may be regnrcled a large one ;-my wife, three· sons, three daughters, two female domestics and myself.- Should ProYidence throw Doct Archer in your way, and you will ha\'e the goodness to mention, my name, saying, I am the husband of Christiana- Bentley Saunders, the daughter of the Revd. John Hyde Saunders,. deed. of Powhatan County Virginia, nnd the fnthcr of Miss Sarah· Du Pre, he will immediately recognize my :family and be able to give· you some satisfactory account of our stand in society
