GEO. W. HOCKLEY To His Excellency )[irabeau B Lamar President Col. :i\IcLeod Letter from .Mr Hockly Houston 18th Oct 1839 No. 1490. JAMES H. STARR TO LAMAR Treasury Department Austin Oct 19-1839

[Addressed:] of the Hepublfo [Endorsed:]

To His Excellency :Mrn..,1.nr,:AL' B. LAMAR President of tlie Hepublic SIR

I am assured by Judge Evans that l\faj. Jones will not accept the appointment of Stock Commissioner, and would therefore respectfully suggest the policy of continuing Mr. Shaw as Acti:ng Stock Commis- sioner until the leave of absence granted the Comptroller shall have expired (.Mr. Shaw, being absent present Acting Comptroller) when it shall be deemed expedient to tender him (Mr Shaw) the permanent appointment- I offer this suggestion from a conviction that :\fr Shaw is quallified and disposed to do his duty, and that through him the head of the Department would at all times be able to know promptly any infor- mation respecting the condition of the Office which he might desire- I am . . . [faded] that the promissory notes of the Gort. which were frequently funded [ ?] in small sums to make up even shares are not to be found in the oJfice, and that the Clerks accuse the late Stock Conu. of applying them to his own use- The amount is not yet · ascertaiiied but I pressume several hundred dollars was thus received in the office. A thorough search of the papers and books of the office has been instituted by :Mr Shaw and the result when known will be communicated to you~ Excellency. I have the honor to be Your Excellency's Most Obt Sevt
