Nine months ago I introduced to you '.Dr. Saml. Pilkington. He was appointed the Surgeon of the Volunteers raised in Houston's commanded by Col Woodlieff and [stayed ?] with them till they [faded] in the faithful performance of his duty. He has been in the woods with me for the last eight clays in pursuit of Jn- dians, and was one of the party_who agreed to remain . . . [faded] the savages for the defence of his p [arty ?] He is as honest a man as ever lived, and I say so because I have tried him fully- He is a devoted friend of mine and is blessed with a fuie understanding. Dr. Pilkington's now that he is out of office would accept the ap- pointment of Stock Commissioner. His habits are of the best kind I understand Dr. Starr approves his appointment
