His Excellency, Genl MIRABEAU B LAMAR Srn. Your Note of today has been recd. and its Contents Noted & prop- erly Appreciated- From my Jong Continuance in the War Department & also owing to the many defalcations on the part of the Officers of the Army of 1836 & 7-in making their returns- the adjutant General being dur- ing the whole time stationed at Head Quarters of the Army. has in- duced me to obligate myself to the lion Secretary of War Genl A Sidney Johnston to discharge the duties of Chief Clerk of his Depart- ment until some other may become duly qualified to take my place. Under those Circumstances & the fact of A vacancy being now existing in the Department, which the applicant can for the present fill. I would prefer, acting as the Chief Clerk in accordance with, the request of Genl Johnston- However without claimint any remuneration for such services- With a full assurance that my motives, will meet your Entire ap- probation, I subscribe myself- Your Excellencys Most Obt Servant CI·IARLES MASON [Addressed:] His Exel Genl Mirabeau B Lamar [Endorsed:] Chas.
