No. 72. FROM TIMOTHY FLINT
[Copy by Lamar] [About 1827] ''La Salle from Canada as we have seen, made the first settlement in this country in 1683. It was at the mouth of the Guadelupe. We have no certain accounts that the Spanish crossed the River del Norte into this c-ountry until 1714. The first point which they occu- pied, was Adayes, not far from Natchitoches. The French, as we have seen, occupied the latter plaee about the same time. A con- flicting claim was thus established on the part of the French and Spanish oecupants to the extensive c-ountry now called Texas, east of the Rio de! Norte. The French alwa¥s claimed to that riYer until the peace of 1762, when the whole· pro;ince of Louisiana was ceded to Spain. The claim u•as revfrro, wh~n our government became pos- sessed by purchase of the rights of France to the countrY. It was occasionallt arita,~ed between our Govt. & that of Spain, b}:' which we acquired ~ londa. [Endorsed :1 Flint Respec-ting the daims of the US. to Texas.
