DR SIR
I know you to have been a kind friend of my late lamented Brother in Law Colonel Handy-and I know that he was devotedly attached to you and to your personal and political interests- For these Rea- sons I take leave to write to you in relation to his Estate and concerns in Texas- If necessary I am inclined to visit your flourishing Re- public to supervise those matters myself, but it is not convenient to me at this time, which must partly account for my venturing to obtrude upon your valuable time-- Mr Levering & Mr. Lusk have the principal charge of the Estate of Col Handy, and Mr Herndon is the counsel for the Absent Heir- I have full confidence in these gentlemen, so far as their knowledge and experience extend, but as I understand there is an important law suit in relation to some Land in the neighbourhood of Fort Bend, in- volving Title, I wish you would do me the favor to Refer me to the first Lawyer in Texas, and also give me the benefit of your own sug- gestions upon this subject. If in requital for you kindness I can render you any Service here, it is unnecessary for me to say you may always command me Very Resy Yrs DAVID PAUL BROWN [Addressed:] To His Excellency Mirabeau B Lamar President of Texas. [Endorsed:] David Paul Brown Phd. June 20, 1839 Handys Business &c
