JAl\'fES ARMSTRONG AND OTHERS TO LA)fAR [Jasper County, Texas, April ? 1839] To his Excellency 1\lmADEAU B La:UAR, President of the Republic of Texas, We respec:tfnlly make Known to your honor, that the Citizens of the County of Jasper are labouring under a great inconvenience for the want of a Notary Public, the present Chief Justice living in the County Site and engaged in a multitude of business both private and public, and say that the County is becoming populous and business mul- tiplying so that we are obliged to ask of your honor the appointment of a Notary for the County of Jasper and by so doing the Citizens will be much benefited- We recommend William :Myers as a fit and proper person to fill that station Yours

This to inform you that in the year l 835. I had an ambitious Son who went to Texas in his passa,ire from N. Orleans was wreck'd, on Board the Hannah & Elizabeth_, Taken by the Mexicans at the mouth of l\fattagorda bay Retaken by the Tcxians, and became a Citizen of Matagorda. In the employment of 1\fr R. R. Royall as Clerk in his mercantile house. In '36 he J oin'd Col. Fanins division and fell in the General rnasi;acre. . You will percieve by 1\f r. R. R. Royalls letter to me that I am en- titled to a ccartain Quantity of land in Texas. he i\Ir. Royall names the Quantity together with the Expences, to me and my Neighbors. the expences appear enormous but as yet I am not Disposed to find fault. not being Informed of the laws or usages of Texas. I state to you my situation and Wishes I have four sons and two daughters my Eldest Daughter is married to L. C. Brown. Universal Clergiman in Troy City, who is Cousin to Nathaniel Townsend. of Texas from whom I have had advice on this occasion while he acted as Consul for the Texians at N. Orleans and if Mr. Townsend should be present in your Department, please to Inform him of this case. My wish has always been since the Death of my son to visit in person. that land were my sons bones are Buried, by, yom· care. for which reason I ask from you, what I may expect If I should come to you in the month of Nov. Next. the expence I will have to meet, for the Location. of said land purchased by the Blood of my son. whose Death together with his braYe nssocintes, hare laid the foundation of the Texian. Republic. my wish is to hnve a pnrt of the land Located in some District were it can be imediately impro,·ed
