The Papers of Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, Volume V

PAPEns OF MrnAnEAU BuoNAPARTE LAMAR 273 In my opinion from the looks, and what I ha,•e heard of the pris- oner; I should take him to be a man, wholly unaware of the great crime Committed by false swearing, and I realy believe his refusal to par- ticipate in our struggle for Independanee proceeded more from Con- stitutional Cowanlice than from unfriendliness to our Cause The Law was however imperitive on me, and he was sentenced to fifty stripes aud $500 fine. I think it would meet with the appro- bation of the Citizens of that section of Country generally, and I am sure it would meet mine, if you would exercise your pardning power Conditioned that he leave the Republic of Texas. The Citizens of Robinson County are not anxious for his pu~ishment, but desirous that a dangerous man should be sent from our young Republic I have just returned from the Courts of Robinson and Milam. All is peace and quiet in that quarter at preasant With Sentiments of the highest respect and regards I am Dear Sir Yours Respectfully JNO T MILLS [Addressed:] His Excellency Mirabeau B Lamar President of the Republic of Texas Houston Politeness of Major Thos Grny [ ?] [Endorsed:] John T l\lil1s Washington 15 Apl 39 Petition Case of Purjury .
