To his Excellency 1\I. B. LAMAR President of the Republic of Texas Srn,

We beg leave to refer to the annexed letters of .i\lr. R. H. Chinn the contents of which arc explicit in regard to the information we crave from your hands relative to an important work which we are about to publish. Col. White gave us very sanguine hopes that the book which he in- tends to compile for our press, was one of vital importance and neces- sity for your republic, but the publication thereof being connected with great expenses, we wish to go as sure as possible and would feel in- finitely obliged to you if you would give us your opinion on the sub- ject and tell us whether really there are hopes to dispose of a certain number of copies of this work throughout your Republic. We had the honor lately to send to your address a Copy of our new Edition of the Civil Code of Louisiana and toda_y we send you a copy of the Code of Practice just published, to both of which our State Legislature has subscribed for a large number of copies, which may scn·e as a proof of the merits of both works. Supposing that, J)(trl·icularl.11, the first work ( Civil Code) would be of service to the bar of your re- public and to its Citizens in general, we have drnwn off a few hundred copies in the English language alone, ( the book being required for this State in fren~h & english) with the hope that the Congress over which you preside, would deem it expedient to subscribe for a certain number pf copies. We haYe however not had any opportunity until now to address to any gentleman of influence to advocate a petition of ours to that effect. Should you deem this work of such utility as has been represented to us by some gentlemen from your country, nncl who have purchased the same for their own use, we would feel grateful if you would indi- cate us the most expedient mode how our object might be obtained. A i:hort C'onversation with Col. White who, nt pre:::ent, is in your city may perhaps fully convince you of the utility of the publication of the "Land Laws." We haYe the honor to he of Your Excellency The most obedt. Sen·ts: E. Jou~s & Co. Publishers nnd Booksellers. rEndorsed:] E Johns & Co 14th. ?lfch 1889 N. 0. of Books &c
