Understanding thro' Gen! Johnson, (Secretary of War) that you have been informed I have made use of language derogatory to y_ou, I beg leave to exculpate m_ysclf as far as in me lies. I have but to pledge my word of honour that it is false, and the Author or Authors base Calumniators, whom I yet hope to discover and den! with accord- ing to their deserts. I have but to remind you that the very fact of my holding a com- mission under your administration is a proof of my nonguiltiness of such baseness. Col. Fisher or any of my intimate friends to whom I .freely express my sentiments, can testify to my never mentioning your name, save in terms of respect.
