No. 1043. A. POPE FIELD TO LAMAR
Vandalia Illinois Feby. 3. 1839.
DEAR Sm Though I have not the honour of n personal acquaintance you will allow me to introduce to your Excellency my young friend )fr. David L. Wood, who was recently Editor of the "Vandalia Free Press." Mr. Wood conducted that journal with acknowledged ability-and stands high in the Philosophical Society of Philada. as a Naturalist of the first Respectability. His Father was for many years a Surg. in the Army of the United States and subsequently acted in that capacity in the Army of Texas, and being a cousin to the lamented Peter \:V. Grayson, who, I believe stood high in that Republic, Mr. Wood carries with him every recom- mendation of respectable connexion. Being informed by :i\lr. W. that he had determined to become a citizen of your young and prospering country I made this proffer of my service in testimoney of his standing, and the estimation in which he is held by his acquaintances. As Mr. Wood has some intentions of establishing a Literary paper in Texas, at some future day. I feel justified in conunendiug his abilities and respectfully speak of him to your Excellency, an<l with every profession of high esteem, I am Yr. Excellency's obt. humb. Servt. A. POPE FIELD. Sec. of State of Illinois. f Addressed :] His Excellency ir. B. Lamar. City of Houston [Endorsed:] A Pope Fields Sec State of lllinois 3d Feb 39
