J would not Yenture, on my very slight :1<.:qua111ra11ce with you, to address you on the subject of this communication, if I were not able to refer you to others in whose opinions you may more safely confide. I understand the Collector Ship of Aransazo has become vacant b_y the resignation of the late incumbent .Mr. Fulton. If this be so, and no provision be yet made to fill the vacancy, I take the liberty of recom- mending to you as a person compete11t to fulfill the duties of that office and worthy of the trust from his character and his sufferings in the cause Mr. James Gourlay Junr., late a resident of Matamoros, and now a citizen of Texas I refer you to the Messrs Whartons A. G. Butler, Lewis P. Cooke & Harvey Hendricks of the Ilonl. Cheraw So Ca U S A Nov 28th 1838 DEAR Sm, My object in now writing to you is to lay before you a .subject which is nearest my heart I wish to enter the Texian Navy as .Midshipman or in any other -respectable situation in the Navy which I could get. Your name is the only public one which I am acquainted with in Texas which will account for my troubling you with this Should you be so kind as to get a situation for me I wj]) make my appearance as soon as requested In making this request I do not expect to amass a fortune by it ·or even to get a good salary my object is mearly to obey the turn of my inclinations and follow the Sea, as long as I get clothes to wear and Victual,-; to eat I shall ne\·er grumble. The Oovernment is not yet in a settled state I am aware but this wm not last always. I am now in my 19th year am six feet high (so much to brag of at least) have a good c>ducation and can walk to Texas. Excuse rue for .troubling you this long.
