Pr_esident of Texas

RESPECTED Sm Dr John Hastie bas just returned from your Republic and informs me that you an<l some other of his friends expressed to him a desire before he left for me to visit Houston profe!:'sionally, and that they would guarantee me $5000. I should have departed for Texas imme- diately but for the fear of placing you in an unpleasant situation if business did not repay me for the loss I should be subjected to, by expences and leaving a lucretive business which I have to depend upon for the support of m_y family. I have, therefore, concluded to write you upon the subject and if possible to make some deffinite arrange- ment agreeable to both parties. I present the following proposition for your consideration viz:- that yourself & friends make up $2000 in your Curency to be paid to me after one :i\Ionths' residence, and on my part, I pledge myself to apply whatever amount I may receive from those who may not be in- cluded in the list of those who subscribe the lj;2000, provided the oper- ations to be done for the subscribers will not amount to the sum, but should it exceed that the balance I receive. This I think is placing it upon fair & equitable ground but should there be any other proposition you can offer by which I shall not be subjected to too loss I should be pleased have it for consideration. I ha,·e placed it at $2000 as my business is at this season of the year will neet [net] me about [one] hundred dollars pr week. My char~es for last three years have been $5.00 for gold plugs- $15. for settmg teeth on gold plate, which if we take into consideration your depre- ciated currency I should haYe the prices doubled in Texas.- When I was in Houston last summer I should have remained some time, but was prevented by business, and my family from extending it beyond a specified time, which was spent in taking a cursory view of your republic If vou should think favorable of mv proposition I will leave imme- diately on receipt of your letter, and 5·ou may rest assured that in my operations I will exercise my best talent in my profession to repay the kindness of tho!:'e who employ me . Dr Hastie informs me that Dr C'ooper exprPSi'ecl the same desHe for my visit
