COWLES TO LAMAR :Macon October 25th 1838. DEAR Srn I trust you will excuse me for addressing you on a Subject in which you have 110 interest, save that beyoml a common feeling of humanity- but I know of no one in Texas who would_ give the information asked in this Jetter with more ready cheerfulness than yourself,- especially to one who cherishes the remembrances of other days- 2\l r R. C. Sanders, who was in Texas on business for Genl.-James Hamilton, and who bore to your Country a number of introductory letters-- one of which was from the writer to yourself- wrote from Houston under date of the 6th of l\f ay last, that he should depart on his contemplated tour the succeeding day- He probably left on that da.v to locate some lands on the Guadalupe River- He ah.o stated that several Surveyors & citizens hnd been killed on the frontier by the Indians- and that he would arm himself to meet every difficulty that might arise from such foes- Since that period I have not heard from him, although he promised to write occasionally, and was to have been here in September- He is a young man who has been in my employ se,·eral years, a11d l esteem him very highly- I have many fears for his safety, and will feel grateful for any information, you can obtain in r()lation to him- With esteem, and regard I remain Yours Very respectfully J.
