ANDREWS AND OTHERS TO LAMAR Bath Steuben Co New York Genl MIRABEAU B LAMA.R DEAR Sm October 8th 18:38 Having seen in the 'l'exns Telegrnphs of the 28 of August & 1st of September several extracts from a paper called "The Banner" printed in Texas charging or insinuating that F .Moore Jr the editor of the Telegraph had been guilty of crime or misconduct prior to his emi- gration to the. Republic of Texas- we deem it our duty as friends & acquaintances of Mr :Moore to repudiate such slanderous imputations- 1\fr F Moore Jr is a son of Dr l\foore a wealthy & very respectable & talented farmer of Livingston County in this state, whose family are respected & esteemed by all who how them. The editor of the Telegraph was a resident of this village for about the period of three years prior to his emigration to Texas & engaged in teaching a select school and in pursuing the study of Law in the office of R Campbell Jr. during his residence at this place he sustained a character for moral- ity and integrity that was above reproach and securecl for himself not only the confidence & esteem of our citizens but their warmest friend- ship & hopes for his future happiness & prosperity- li'rom the commencement of the Rernlution in Texas (which has so gloriously terminated in the establishment of a Republican govern- ment) l\fr l\Ioore was a warm & devoted friend to the cause of the Revolutionists-he abandoned fair prospects at this place and set out for Texas on foot, not as an achenterous speculator but as a friend to Liberty and the rights of man determined to hazard his life, and his all in the cause of the Texean patriots- he is no "fugitive from justice" Sir but a man whose character is unexceptionable and who is worthy of the esteem of all men whose esteem is worth possessing- We trust he will be esteemed in his adopted Country- \Ye are aware that the present is a time of political excitement in your Republic and we presume it is to such cause that these charges against .Mr Moore ha,·e their origin- Disclaiming all intention to interfere with the politicks of Texas we solicit your friendly aid in defending our friend l\Ir j(oore against all imputations that may be made against his character while n citizen of the United States- Be pleased to present to Mr Moore our warmest respects & believe us to be Very Respectfully Your Obt Scr\"ts JoHN T.
