DE.AR Srn I hope you will excuse me in troubling you so frequent1y with my business which is of no interest to you. our personal acquaintance in Georgia was quite limited owing to the remoteness that we lived from each other, But your public character was very familiar to me having supported you in all your public appointments and I am much gratified· to see that the high-minded and honourable course which you have always pursued will elevate you to the presidency of Texas. owing to you and General Rusk being the .ru1ing men of Texas. gives me con- fidence in the Government and I have determined to sell out my pos- sessions here and become a citizen of 'l'exas as soon as practicable from the information I received from :Mr Hays I was desirous of visiting Texas previous to this in order to secure a settlement of good Lands before they were located. But could not arrange my business in time to effect this object and cannot now come out until October at which time I am apprehensive that land will advance l\-Ir. Hays will examine the land in the different sections of the country: and where my family will have a prospect of enjoying good health and convenient to a good market. as his knowledge of Texas is somewhat limited you can render us both es$ential service by informing him where he will find the land that is most desirable for a permanent settlement I discover in read- ing the papers that the congress of Texas has passed a law authorizing a canal opened through the country Mr. Hays is well acquainted with that kind of busiuess aud is well qualified as a superintendant he may probably wish to uudertake a part of the "\\~ork. He is an industrious persevering man and worthy of the utmost confidence any service you render him in the way of business will be gratefully ach."110wledged by me I have an Idea of erecting a saw mill when I get my hands iu Texas and I wish Mr. Hays to make a selection for that purpose If you know of a suitable situation that will warrant a business of that kind you will oblige me b~· informing )Ir. Hays so that he may examine it previous to my coming out. Very Respectfully your obt Servt ANSEL}\[ BUGG Coosawda Autauga County [Georgia] July 9th. 1838 r .Adtlre!:SC'll :l (lml .Mirnheau B Lamar Vice President Texas.
