City of Houston 20th :March 1838

Capt ANTHONY FOSTER Dr.An Srn

.From you I received a letter some short time since and have a.t this moment an other which you addressed to our mutual friend 1lr Buford to the same effect stating that you had been charged with having embezled public funds placed in your hands as an agent for this Go,·ernment and that you left Texas in a Clandistine manner. I am pleased Dr Sir to have ft in my power to give a full and unequivocal contracliction to both these charges and to bear testimony to the hon- ouraule & irreproachable character you bore .lluring your sojourn in this country. I never heard of your ever ha,·ing been appointed the agent of this Government to dispose of Land and nothing of the kind is to be found in the public records as to your runnin~ away it is as false as the other charge and I doubt not that both have been fab- ricated for malicious purposes We were much together in the army belonged to the same company, often in the same mess, and I doubt not that eYery one of our ol<l comrades will take us much pleasure as J clo in testifying to your deportment as being that of the Gentleman in Camps & the gallant soldier in battle. You will please receive this expression of my continued good feelings, towards you Yours &C J{rnABEAU B. LAMAR [Endorsed:] Letter to Capt A Foster 20th :Mch 1838 No. 700.
