M. B. LA'l\lAR, Vice President of Texas. Srn: You will no doubt be surprised at receiving a communication of this Kind, from a perfect stranger. Although I have never had the honor of conversing with you, I have had the pleasure of seeing you, and of hearing your address to the people of :Macon. 'l'hat address made an impression on my mind, that time cannot erase. You will no doubt understand my feelings, from the quotation below, the author of which you are perfectly acquainted with. "When shall I meet the audacious foe, Face to face where the flags are flying T I long to thin tl1em two at a blow, And ride o'er the dead and the dying" Yes, I long to fly to the assis_tance of those who fighting in the glorious cause of liberlJJ. The object of this letter, is, to obtain your intercession in my be- half. I should like to have some office in the army, one, that would not compell me to associate with the vulger part of the soldiery. A 11011-commissioned office, is all I crave, I will depend upon my own exertions for further promotion. Should you require it in your an- swer to this, (if you will hono1· me with one) I think I can get some vouchers, whose names arc fameliur to you. I have serYed with the .M aeon F ol11.:ntee1·s in the Florida, '1t'ar and flatter myself that I ac- quitted me as a soldier. You may think it presumption in a stranger to apply for an office in your army; but I assure you it is not the office I crave, it is merely, that I may not be obliged to associate and make equals of those prof- ligates who are to be found among the common soldiery of every Nation. An immediate answer to this, would be thankfully recei,ed. Yours Respectfully .:\. P. Brmn I .\<!dressed:] Gen l\I. B. Lamar. Houston, Tcxa:-.
