your time & kindness It always has been my wish ever since the declaration of Indipendance by the Tcxicans to offer my services al- though in a humble capasily- In a wonl sir I wish to enter the service of the Texian Navy, and to • this I have taking the liherty of adrcssing you.-)Iy Cousin Isaac Ticknor comanclecl a company of Eighty odd patriots from :Montgom- ery Ala-who were massacred in Texas Some hope of avenging his death yet remains If you can obtain for me a commission in the navy of that country whose cause yon have so nobly espoused You will have the well wishes of a Georr1ian I am seventeen years of age and have had sufficient education to pre- pare me for the navy In offering my services I lose a situation in a large house of this place. Surely sir you have not too many men in your naval services-and I may venture to hope that the offers of a boy who has seen some land services may uot be altogether unacceptable. If sir I can have a eomission as midshipman in your service have the kindness to let me know b_v the first leisure you may ha,·e, and forward the necessary Papers to me at Apalachicola- I remain sir (waiting your pleasure) a well wisher to yourself and the Country of your adoption JAMES H.
