PAPERS OF MIR.ABEAU BUONAPARTE LAMAR 123 Reuben H. Roberts, this imperfect expression of my esteem & regard. For .the last year or more Reuben has been soliciting my approbation to go to Texas. Actuated by feelings natural to a parent I wished to have him near me, & endeavoured to divert his attention from such an adventure by engaging his mind in mercantile speculations. But find- ing that his ar.dor for emigration increased in proportion to obstacles thrown in his way, I determined at length to let him go. I therefore consign him to your guardianship & pray you to dispose of him in the way you may think most conducive to the services of the country and the advancment of his own interest. You will find him tractable and ready to engage in any service you may assign him ei~her as a citizen or soldier. He carries with him a good rifle & few boys of his age understand the use of it better. He is also a competent surveyor and carries with him the necessary instruments for engaging in that busi- ness. Should it be in your power to further his interest in any man- ner; I want no other guarranty than I have that you will do it. A line from you, Should you find sufficient leisure, would be considered a rare treat to Your old friend W. ROBERTS [Addressed:] His Excellency Mirabeau B. Lamar vice president of the Republic of Texas By R. H. Roberts [Endorsed:] Willis Roberts Mobile Octr 24th 1836
