scrip-They have our money, and now in amount tell us, we must let them fix the terms upon which they will hold it-and in the face of a solemn contract, deliberately made, and signed by every member of the Cabinet-This I know is not the work of the other members than the head. I know them (the signers of the contract) to be men who would never have allowed such a communication to pass with their approbation. No government can exist, with such evidence of palpable bad faith blazed upon its front-and that too towards its first and best friends. I am in advance to the government, and have incurred responsibilities by the solicitations· of the President, and from my faith in the government, to a considerable amount beyond my subscription to the loan, and I deem it useless to render an account of it, for if the same government is reelected I shall never I believe concern myself more upon the subject than in the communications which I have written. I was one of the warmest advocates for Texas-have written much in her cause, and intended going great lengths for her-such was the feeling of all concerned in that loan-Such is not now the case however-all stand suspended to see whether the elections which have occurred, resulted in the support of those who have treated us with such bad faith-If they have and such conduct is tolerated, we are done-If not, and it is shown that the people of Texas will not submit to be dishonored, and have by the elections given an earnest of it, then we are again her friends, and willing to aid her-I at least am, and shall go far in shewing it-Texas has the brightest prospects that any new country ever had-so has every land holder in the country if an honest, upright course is pursued-Otherwise there will be such a general hue and cry against her, that emigrants will be detered from going there-Capitalists will refuse to invest money in her lands-and they will be at so low, a price that a few resident monopolisers will get the whole for a song-The soldier-the settler-every man in the country who has land to sell is interested in maintaining, a character of integrity for Texas-for if she has not such a character, there will be no security for property-No one will venture to invest money in her funds, or lands, and both will weep over her lost condition- So soon as I hear of the result of her elections I will write to you again-I am glad to hear you are going on there-You have been one of her first and warmest friends-your devotion to her cause, and your constancy, entitle you to weight and favor with her, and you will have it-you may do much good-I hope it will not be long
