PREFACE.

rising importance of an agricultural state, which seem!:! almost peculiar to that fe1·tile region, and to the prog- ress already made in laying a foundation there for a grC'at and happy republic. When I took leave for an excursion to the north, it was not with any expectation of being called upon to communicate with the public in the manner I now do. This will, I trust, be a sufficient apology for any defects or inaccuracies, in some circumstances, con- nected with my statements, for all of which my sole dependence is on memory. ?!Iy excuse for writing under circumstances so disadvantageous, is the re- peated solicitations of my friends, who are desirous of seeing some details of what has passed under my ob- serrntion, and are partial enough to believe me able to correct many apprehensions afloat that are prejudicial to the place I have chosen for my home. The slight sketch, in what follows, I have no hesitation in offer- ing to my friends and the public as correct in every thing material, and have confidence that it will be re- ceived with all desirable indulgence and candor.
