PREFACE.
BY way of preface to what is recorded in the follow- ing pages, I will brietiy prcmis<', that, having resided several years in the Southern States, without snececd• ing in business to my entire satisfaction, I was in- duced, by some ncwspa.pcl' representations of Texas, to visit that famed, but as yet, little-known region of thli West. I lived in the vicinity of Brazoria and Mata- gorda, something more than two years; at which places I enjoyed opportunities of acquaintance with some of the most intelligent and distinguished men of that country. At the breakiug out of the war, and when an army was wanted, I ,nu; among the first to come forward in support of the righls und interests of that community. I remained in the service until my escape from the :Mexicans to Velasco. \Vhile in the country -as I had occasion to pass over no inconsiderable ex- tent of territory,-I was not inattentive to the natnral scenery, most beautiful in many parts, the suscepti- bility of improvements, adapted to the opulence and
