[4356) [CARSON to BURNET]

4th April 1836

My Dear President

Since writing I have conversed with Judge Hardin and he thinks it best to place the Smiths under charge of Col Stanly, who will be here in a day or two & send them to Galveston or to Harrisburg. I will issue an order accordingly. You have my consent to pardon them conditionally that they serve during the War. If Stanly is returning lo Galveston, he will be directed to keep them safe till he hears from you. You had best send their conditionally pardon to that place that they may be put to work immediately on their arrival. Judge Harden says they are a great burthen & expense here & it will relieve him & the guard by geting rid of them. I take the liberty of issuing the order as stated not doubting it will meet your approval. I have kept no copy of the Express, please direct Mr Hill to make one & file it Thine ever Sam P. Carson His Excellency David G Burnet President. P. S. My spirits and hopes are much better if Houston has only whipt them we are safe. When I wrote this morning I was desponding, every thing appears better now. Still my fears & feelings are deeply interested for the hundreds of families who are on the other side of the Trinity. They may not be able to cross for days perhaps weeks in which case should the enemy cross Brazos they will be clistroyed. This is ALL I fear now. The movement on part of the U. S. Troops convinces me that all will be well in that quarter. Carson I start an Express with this. Send this on to Houston it will delight the Army as it does the people
