(4345] [ROBERTSON to BUTLER]
Tampico January 4th 1836
Mv dear Sir, ·
Your esteemed favor of the 17th ulto. has been duly received. We have nothing positive from Texas, what accounts we have are so contradictory, that but Ii ttle reliance can be placed in the reports, one thing appears certain that Cos has in some way or other abandoned Bejar, and his brother tells me, he is now in Laredo with 500 men in conjunction with Ramirez Sesma. If in case the question should ever be brought up with respect to the shooting of the 28 prisoners of Mexia, 1 can give you officially, every information - the day previous to their being shot, I called upon every consul in the place to accompany me lo the Commandante, and lo ascertain if he had the power to suspend the sentence until a communication could be sent to Genl. St. Anna, our motives were prompted by feelings of humanity, knowing those people never had a fair trial, every consul went but the English, and we received for an answer that it was impossible for any respite to he granted. We learn from good authority that Mexia has landed with his men in Brasoria, that great speculations are going on in the north on account of the possibility of a war with France.
I remain my dear Sir, very truly yours Geo. R. Robertson
